Dialectical Behavior Therapy
For teens or adults
Dialectical Behavior Therapy is a research-driven specific cognitive-behavioral approach designed to teach you the how, why and what of managing intense emotions, destructive relationships, dangerous thoughts and self-harm. DBT addresses the intense emotional reactions that a person has toward life events that are more intense than others, particularly within relationships and toward yourself.
To experience the full impact of DBT, weekly sessions are recommended with participation in a DBT skills group. DBT teaches mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness (relational skills), Distress Tolerance, and Emotion Regulation. Distress tolerance teaches that distress is a normal part of life and tolerating it is a key skill to overall success. Emotion Regulation teaches how to accurately identify and express emotion as well as how to decrease intense, overwhelming emotion.
DBT is a highly structured, skills-based approach that requires personal responsibility and leverages the relationship between therapist and client to promote new, adaptive behaviors.
