"Even though I know I'm not worthless, it still feels true somehow..."
"I just can't stop my overwhelming self-doubt."
"I can't seem to put my past behind me..."
Regardless of whether our pain is due to significant trauma or just difficult experiences in our lives, EMDR transforms the pain that has become a lie ("I'm not good enough") and changes it into a truth ("I am good enough") we can base our lives on. EMDR moves the memory driving this pain from the amygdala (fight or flight response) to the frontal cortex where we can regulate and problem-solve. By moving where our pain is stored in the brain, our limbic system (or feeling triggered!) is no longer activated unnecessarily and we can understand our experiences with a completely different perspective. Not only can we change the way we think about our pain, but we eliminate our brain's tendency to go to specific negative thoughts that previously drove old lies, difficult emotions and challenging behavior. EMDR creates balance in our mind and body without the need to extensively talk about our experiences or dwell on them. EMDR can be an incredibly fast and brief therapy or may take longer depending on your specific need.
