Parent Coaching
"Am I a bad parent? Is it me?"
"How did our family get to this point?"
"I can't believe I acted like that...something has to change..."
"Things would be so much easier if my spouse and I could just get on the same page."
Parenting: you never thought it could get like this. Or maybe the parent you've become is exactly who you swore you'd never become. Either way, parenting is so much harder than you could have imagined. The most amazing part of it is that you're actually trying! You haven't given up. You're not crazy. But things are still falling a part. What's going on? How did it get like this?
There is so much secret shame in the parenting journey. So simple and yet so powerful to be told that being human in the parenting process is okay. There is unbelievable power in imperfect parenting. Studies find that children who are raised in environments where warm, loving boundaries are a priority, parents model typical emotion and, most importantly, relationship repair is modeled and encouraged- these children learn resiliency. Resiliency is the number one factor in determining overall outcome for a child's success. Resiliency is not taught by parents who always get it right or never make a mistake. Resiliency is learned in the process of imperfection.
Utilizing evidence-based approaches like Functional Family Therapy, Multi-Systemic Family Therapy, Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS), Emotion Coaching and Love & Logic, your parenting approach can go from feeling chaotic to empowered. Don't give up on the hope that you can be a confident, empowered parent. Mistakes and all- you can know that you're doing your best and that perhaps, your best right now can be even better. Find courage to take the steps to let unhelpful family patterns heal. The answer isn't easy but it can come with supportive and non-shaming coaching. Why do we so often think that one of life's greatest responsibilities should be done without help?
